Back when I started working in-house, proofreading was definitely a two-way process. As an English native rookie, I was often asked to proofread for subject experts who were not native speakers of English, and then call them to discuss my suggestions on the phone. It could be a humbling experience - I learned to check before making changes!

Now I proofread for one agency, where I can sometimes leave notes for the translator, or she can write to me, but it is a clunky process, and we are not in direct contact. I don't even know her surname! ▲ Collapse

A small number of my customers (direct clients and translation agencies) ask for a "ready-to-print" service, so these texts are reviewed "in-house". I have an agreement with another translator where we proofread each other work. For most of my customers I ignore if my work is proofread, reviewed or edited or not, with two exceptions and in these cases I know who the proofreader/reviewer/editor is and we exchange views quite often.

Up until last year, never. I have now found a whopping two agencies that allow translators to coordinate and agree on terminology and the rest upfront.

But I occasionaly ask, if the project has a proof-reader.
