Description:	There are a variety of educational programs in existence globally that can provide the proper training for potential lawyer-linguists, as well as assist them to maintain their skills. This panel will discuss the various options available to train as a lawyer-linguist. An archive of last year’s presentation will also be linked for future reference.
Speakers:	Suzanne Deliscar — Moderator Ms. Deliscar was called to the Ontario Bar in 2004. As principal of Suzanne E. Deliscar, Lawyer-Linguist, she focuses on matters involving both legal and language issues. Her practice was created through the combination of her language skills in French and Spanish and the practice of law in a variety of areas, including civil litigation, wills & estates, corporate/commercial, and family law. Ms. Deliscar has extensive experience in the translation of a variety of legal documents. She has extensive experience in the translation of official documents, and has reviewed, analyzed and abstracted over 500 Spanish language contracts for a large multinational corporation. Ms. Deliscar is also experienced in providing document review in French. Suzanne Deliscar is also the developer and presenter of over 13 popular translator training webinar programs in the areas of legal translation, official document translation, and marketing for translators and interpreters. She is also the founder of the Lawyer-Linguists Forum, an online community of lawyer-linguists which fosters discussion and exchange in an effort to improve awareness and growth of the profession. Ms. Deliscar has been heavily involved in the community through her mission work in Haiti, as well as holding various positions locally, regionally, nationally and internationally within her church community. Ms. Deliscar has also hosted numerous “Ask the Lawyer” Days in banks and for community organizations. She is a lawyer and interpreter at the international Criminal Court at the Hague. She is currently working as a freelance linguist in which she is qualified for 5 languages. She is a qualified paralegal in civil court practice in Scotland. Sue Leschen Sue Leschen is a lawyer – linguist, the Director of Avocate a niche market legal and commercial French language services company and also an independent trainer for language professionals in the areas of professional conduct, legal terminology. She is also a mentor for everything you need to know and do to set up and run a successful business. Sue is a member of the Professional Conduct Committees of: Institute of Translation and Interpreting National Register of Public Service Interpreters Regulatory Body for Sign Language Interpreters and Translators National Registers of Communication Professionals working with Deaf and Deaf - Blind people. She is also member of: Chartered Institute of Linguists – Council (governing body) Association of Police and Court Interpreters International Association of Interpreters and Translators Sue supports the need for qualified, experienced, security vetted , insured and professional interpreters and translators. Sue Leschen http://www.avocate.co.uk Chris Rathbone I’m Canadian and initially studied at the University of Saskatchewan (B.A. and J.D.). I have spent 18 years in Japan in Matsumoto, Nikko, Karuizawa, Sapporo, Kobe and Tokyo among other places, and have become fluent in the Japanese language, passing level 1 of the Japanese Language Proficiency Test. Since completing a Master’s degree in law (LL.M.) at Hokkaido University in 2000 I have worked in Tokyo as a legal translator, and have been fortunate enough to be exposed to numerous international legal transactions. Through this exposure I have gained an understanding of Japanese law, and in 2007 I was appointed head translator at the Tokyo office of an international law firm. Subsequently passing the Massachusetts State bar exam, I was admitted as an attorney at law in Massachusetts in 2010. I began teaching courses at Temple University in 2011. From September of 2013, I have been working in ediscovery as a project consultant and document reviewer.
