English term

minor canon

Not for points English to Italian Other Religion
Hi, I have to translate, for an internship, a children's short story written in 1885 called "The Griffin and the Minor Canon" by Frank Stockton (an American writer). My problem lies in the term "minor canon". This term is referring to the religious sphere (more precisely to the church hierarchy) and I should translate it into the corresponding italian, but I cannot find a term that satisfies me. "Canonico" is not a word commonly used in Italian when referring to the religious sphere and since the target audience is quite young, I would like to find a more suitable term.

viceparroco / vicario parrocchiale (o canonico minore)

Se riferito alla Chiesa cattolica, potrebbe trattarsi di questo. Anche alla pagina linkata da Emmanuella si trova un termine simile.

Venne successivamente ordinato diacono e quindi divenne vicario (canonico minore).
He was subsequently ordained to the diaconate, later becoming vicarius (minor canon).

prete, sacerdote, presbitero o ministro del culto minore

Buongiorno Beatrice, secondo me potresti sostituire il termine canonico con prete o sacerdote dato che stai traducendo un racconto per bambini. Visto il contesto, il sostantivo canonico qui si riferisce al presbitero, ovvero l'ecclesiastico o chierico che ha il compito di presiedere il culto detto anche più comunemente sacerdote.

parroco

Considering that in the story the "minor canon" is a person (the clergyman responsible for the spiritual care and maintenance of a church or cathedral), I think that the best and most widely understood translation for this would be "parroco" (parish priest).
