G'day everyone

I'm a legal owner of an ABBYY Finereader 9.0 licence, but every time you install it, you need to "activate" it online. Now ABBYY has decided that I had installed it one time too many, because when I try to reactivate my copy (after having reinstalled Windows afresh, as translators do), the web site tells me that it had detected that I'm running too many copies of ABBYY.

I guess I'll be off to them warez sites again to get a keygen for my *legal* copy...<

Contact the ABBYY agent in your country or ABBYY directly. I'm sure they will be able to help.
For example the ABBYY agent in Poland is very helpful.

Regards

Piotr

No ABBYY office in my country May 21, 2009

There is no ABBYY agent in my country, and the only way to contact ABBYY is via the agent in your country. Unless I've missed something on their web site.

By the way, I don't think using a crack or keygen is necessarily illegal if the software is legally licensed to you.

I have also had very good experience with ABBYY May 21, 2009

I remember having some sort of problem at one time. As far as I recall, I contacted them at a German office and they even sent me the software on a CD without charge, as well as solving whatever the problem was. I recall that they were more than helpful.

If I were you, Samuel, I would contact whichever branch is nearest to you - in whatever country that may be. Obviously the problem you are having is not something which is intentional on their part.

no warez May 21, 2009

Samuel, I think you'd rather re-read your contract or other papers regarding how many times one can re-ativate the software and the guarantee period (usually a year or three).
I don't think using a crack or keygen is necessarily illegal

First, warez *always* contain viruses, troyans and other malware;
Second, using a 'cracked' license automatically renders you as a criminal;
Third, if the licence is 'cracked' the warranty may void.
. . .
So, I would contact the Vendor and discuss the issue. I'm pretty sure that they will be happy to assist and keep you as a legal client.

Cheers

I don't even know if you really meant the first comment but it's obviously untrue.
The second, again, obviously untrue. It may be illegal (who knows, and it obviously depends on the country so blanket statements like yours are clearly dead wrong). It's certainly against the terms and conditions, but no more.

It depends on a case by case basis May 21, 2009

ABBYY Finereader 8.0's EULA contains no specification of a limitation on the number of activations. It only says that I can't install it on more than one computer at a time, and that I need to activate it to use it. I'm also not allowed to decompile it or modify it. That's it. I'm sure 9.0 says more or less the same.

First, warez *always* contain viruses, troyans and other malware;

A sweeping statement.

You may also be interested in Sandboxie.
http://www.sandboxie.com/
Sandbox security software for Windows. Install and run programs in a virtual sandbox environment without writing to the hard drive.

And I did not say I want to download warez. I said that I would have to visit warez sites. Because that's where key generators are most easily found. There is more to get from warez sites than just warez.

Second, using a 'cracked' license automatically renders you as a criminal;

True, but in this case the licence is not cracked. One can download cracked versions of software from the internet, but that is not what I propose here. I'm only interested in a licence key generator.

In my case, I'm the legal owner of a licence, and to use the program I need to enter three sets of numbers. I need those numbers. I'm not in contravention of the licence -- ABBYY is. ABBYY may only cancel the licence unilaterally if I fail to comply with the EULA. I think I'm entitled to do anything I want (within the limits of the EULA) to get the program working.

Third, if the licence is 'cracked' the warranty may void.

Do you know many softwares that come with warranties? ABBYY certainly does not:

19.1.1 ABBYY expressly disclaims any warranty or liability obligations to you of any kind, and the SOFTWARE, including any related documentation, is provided "as is" without warranty or condition of any kind, either express or implied, including, without limitation, the implied warranties and conditions of merchantability, fitness for any particular purpose, or non-infringement;

So, I would contact the Vendor and discuss the issue.

As it happens, I did follow Astrid's advice earlier today and contacted them. According to their site, my "local" office is in Russia, and today I also discovered that the licence I bought from their web site two years ago is for the Ukrainian zone. I'm in Africa... so perhaps Russian is "closest" to me in some or other way that I can't figure out.

Same issue May 21, 2009

I ran into the same issue. I had to call - and be rerouted - and they eventually reset my account.

I'm trying my best to stay away from software you have to activate. Windows, OK. Trados, I guess. But otherwise it really gets irritating. It's my business if I want to format my hard drive and reinstall everything, or install a new hard drive or install other hardware. Software houses are really getting arrogant about this.

Why don't you just write... May 22, 2009

I'm sure they should be able to help.

Piotr

Again?

Contact ABBYY directly and they'll reset your account in no time.

I can confirm this. For example according to Ethiopian law only Ethiopian products can have a copyright or similar protection and they have a lot of new software here, but no Ethiopian ones..

Now that I know a disadvantage of Abbey 9 to Abbey 8, I am curious about the advantages?

I contacted both the agent in my country and the regional branch. The local agent said they can't help me because I bought the software online and not via them. The regional branch was helpful, sent me a new activation number, and reset the number of online activations that I can have. Oh, and I have FineReader 8, not 9 as I had thought.

No problem in france Feb 21, 2010

I am surprised as in Europe it is very simple to reactivate my licence every time I reinstall Windows/pour white wine on my laptop/etc. Abby looks like a safe company so you should take a deep breath and try the regular procedure (again).
