I’m not exactly concerned: I’ve been around for a long while and if I had to name one or two elements that are out of my control (I have control over most of the aspects mentioned by declining unacceptable rates or deadlines) would be irregularity of work (though this is also what makes the charm and the excitement of this profession) and late payments or even worse non-payments. Maintaining my client base is one of my priorities though new clients are always welcome…

I have enough clients and I still make enough to get by on at my current rates. However, I'm having a kidney removed next week, and hope to be able to get back to work in a month or so after the op. So, work-life balance is about the closest to my situation.
I hope that you get well soon and have a speedy recovery!

At least you'll win the upcoming poll "How have you made up for translation income lost to AI?" Good luck!

Fingers crossed for you Neil! I'm mainly concerned with keeping my clients who are all really wonderful, although new wonderful clients are always welcome.
Who came up with increasing quality standards? | Aug 25, 2023 |
Who is driving them up (don't tell me it's ChatGPT)? If I understand anything about our work, people have been making consistent efforts to bring the quality standards down. It takes a personal stance to keep your standards high while being faced with all those temptations to cut corners. Maybe work-life in my case? All in all, I'm okay as I am

Having lost one of my major clients in June (not my fault though) and having made that beginner's mistake of relying on just a handful of companies (I know, I know...), my biggest concern is getting more clients now...On the other hand, I was able to spend nice summer holidays with my kids without too much stress of deadlines and that pays off too!

Getting New Clients | Aug 25, 2023 |
Made a number of mistakes as I started on the path to becoming a freelance translator, and one of those wasn't gathering a profile together with the work from my previous in-house-esque role. Getting clients and being able to live off of translation alone is the most concerning thing for me, for sure.

Just became a mum without even knowing I was pregnant, trust me, just as flabbergasted as anyone in this situation. My buniness is fine, good clients, good income. But I have a crying baby in the background once and a while. And none of my work matches her cries. Still trying to fit all in nicely, but at least I don't have to get rid of a kidney. Get well soon Neil!

Thomas Pfann wrote: expressisverbis wrote: There should be an option like "Other". No, there should never be an option "Other". Fair enough. But the polls should at least offer the option NOTA.

I have no concerns other than my health, which, with a small but adequate pension, is my only point, no professional concerns. So yes, I also think there should be a 'none of the above' or any other neutral options. Actually, with a son in Hungary and myself an EU citizen, I'm a lot more concerned about environmental, aecological and military developments than personal kinds.
