Swedish term

förskjutning av blodvolymen perifert

Swedish to English Medical Medical: Pharmaceuticals Clinical trial: Drug tested for treatment of orthostatism
A certain drug being tested is intended to treat orthostatism. The below information appears regarding drug indications -- i.e., specifics about what is being treated:

"ortostatiska besvär av sympatikoton typ ... eller asympatikoton typ av primär ... eller sekundär form (skador eller sjukdomar i centrala nervsystemet eller vid medikamentellt betingade ortostatiska besvär förenade med _förskjutning av blodvolymen perifert_)

The best translation I can come up with leaves me with wording that sounds awkward at the end. Is there a way to come up with less awkward wording without compromising meaning accuracy, or am I worrying over nothing? Here's my translation:

"Orthostatic complaints of sympathicotonic type ... or asympathicotonic type of primary ... or secondary form (injuries or diseases in the central nervous system or with drug-induced, conditioned orthostatic complaints combined with _blood volume displacement peripherally_)

TIA for any suggestions.

Deane Goltermann Dec 3, 2013:
Central vs peripheral A suggestion here is to note that central blood volume displacement is clear so the opposite should be Tania's suggestion. The simple solution tho is 'peripheral displacement of blood volume' as stated here (http://circres.ahajournals.org/content/24/5/711.full.pdf).

peripheral blood volume displacement

I would probably use this.
I didn't find any refs with that exact wording however.
Example sentence:

Cardiovascular responses to heat stress and blood volume displacements during ...

These data taken together with previous electrophysiological evidence support the notion that peripheral blood volume receptors participate in the control of ...

agree Deane Goltermann : Agree here, 4 word translation of 4 Swe words, and says it exactly. Concise, and exact!

disagree Sven Petersson : The proffered translation is open to interpretations, it's not clear if the blood volume moves to or from the periphery; I would rather read it as from.

good point, Sven - the direction of movement is not clear. In that case maybe Cynthia's own suggestion works best (see end of Q)

a shift of blood volume to the periphery

:o)
Peer comment(s):

disagree Deane Goltermann : Linguistically, this is an example of word inflation --8 Eng words for 4 Swe. Addendum: clarity and readability come with concise communication in words, no. of characters is irrelevant.

The improvement in readability and clarity does, IMHO, justify the increase of the number of words (4), especially as the number of characters is identical to the number of characters in the first proffered translation (33).
