In an international political context, I've often translated proiezione as influence. However, in the following sentence:
L’esplodere della bolla finanziaria ha provvisoriamente tagliato le unghie – forse qualcosa di più – alle proiezioni geopolitiche di Putin e Medvedev.
I wonder if "ambitions" would be more appropriate.

assumptions
As Regina notes, "proiezioni" here transfers to politics the metaphorical use in statistics of "projection" as a synonym for "forecast". "Ambition", "agenda" and "plans" are not quite the same thing.
The collocations "geopolitical projections/predictions/prognosis" are not terribly idiomatic in English so I would suggest "geopolitical assumptions".

One problem with John's context is the dreadful mixed metaphor - clipping the nails of projections sounds quite a dangerous procedure! - but it seems clear that the writer is talking about assumptions that have been undermined, compromised or whatever by the financial crisis.

I may be stating the obvious, to Regina at least ;-), but "ambitions", "agenda" and "plans" have connotations of potential or actual action that are absent in "proiezioni". Sometimes the line between translating and spin-doctoring can be very thin indeed!
