Italian term

canale detritico

Italian to English Science Geology
Tourism website - walks in Italy, in this case near the Austrian border. Not much more context, I'm afraid. The trail takes you through woods and then crosses a "canale detritico". I imagine it is a canal containing detrital material, but is there a technical term? I've found references to "alluvial canals" but not anything reliable for "detrital canal". Many thanks.
Proposed translations (English)
4 +2 debris flow
4 gully
2 rubble gully

Tania Lines (asker) Mar 13, 2008:
Thanks to all of you. I've gone for "debris flow channel". Happy translating!
Paul O'Brien Mar 12, 2008:
great, but in the meantime i think nadia is right. a geologist friend of mine has just forwarded me the same term independently.
Tania Lines (asker) Mar 12, 2008:
Thanks to all of you for your feedback. I'm going to research this further...
Paul O'Brien Mar 12, 2008:
they might mean grooves formed by erosion (thousands and millions of years of rain, ice burning its way into the rock and then melting after the end of the ice age etc.) and now consisting of sedimentary rocks. i saw a nice example when i was in norcia.
Tania Lines (asker) Mar 12, 2008:
Hi Pauley. The sentence goes: "il sentiero sale per rocce e canali detritici seguendo la cresta orientale del monte". And another: "il sentiero sale ripido nel bosco, poi attraversa un canale detritico". Doesn't give much away, does it...?
Paul O'Brien Mar 12, 2008:
is it a man-made canal? can you give more of the text?
