Italian term

l’iniziativa e il suo svolgimento

Italian to English Marketing Advertising / Public Relations Public Relations Project
Appears in a document concerning a PR project for a company where schoolchildren produce images/pictures (it doesn't specify what they actually are), which will then be published on the company's website and inhouse magazine. Part of the project involves filming the children as they produce the images so that's where the "svolgimento" comes into it.

al fine di pubblicizzare-documentare all’esterno l’iniziativa XXXX e il suo svolgimento.

I can't think how to phrase the "e il suo svolgimento".

Thanks,
Dominic

Discussion

Dominic Currie (asker) Feb 13, 2010:
All down to context in the end I decided to go with Jim's answer because, as he rightly pointed out, even though the document refers to a PR exercise it's actual purpose is to generate a legal contract. So, it seemed more appropriate to use a more formal legal tone. That said, I was really impressed, as ever, by the other solutions proposed and I never cease to be amazed by what different translators can come up with, especially with difficult terms such as “il suo svolgimento”. I particularly liked: its execution; its implementation; how it is carried out; as it unfolds; and in the making.

Anyway, long live Kudoz!

Dominic Currie (asker) Feb 5, 2010:
meaning of 'esterno' here I think 'esterno" means external to the school not the company, because the publication would be within the company magazine/website. Anyway I've translated it as the "external publication-documentation", to be as broad as possible, just in case.
Dominic Currie (asker) Feb 5, 2010:
More context The source document is a letter of engagement with disclaimer and annexed disclosure and consent in relation to the processing personal data under the Italian Privacy code.

Without giving too much away for reasons of confidentiality, here's some more context that may help:
Con questo documento XXX incarica la scuola…… alla realizzazione di immagini per la rivista (company magazine) n. ….dal titolo …. (titolo non definitivo) per il sito internet (company website).............

Oltre all’attività sopra specificata, XXX vi affida l’incarico di fare delle riprese di backstage dell’attività mentre gli studenti stanno realizzando le immagini.
This is the "svolgimento".

Hope this helps.
James (Jim) Davis Feb 5, 2010:
More source text Dominic please. It is far from clear what "esterno" means here, filming outdoors or advertising it outside the company. Your register is relaxed, but the Italian source reads like a business document.

the initiative and its performance

Now we know that this is a letter of engagment, which when accepted becomes one half of a contract, then the translation has to be just as precisely vague and generic as the Italian. Of course the initiative is in fact a project, but the letter says it is un'iniziativa and not a progetto, so why should the English "improve" on the original. If it was advertising OK, but you have to cover your rear-end with contracts.

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks Jim. As explained in my discussion I chose your answer because it fitted the overriding legal nature of the source document. Also, I used "initiative" because it was actually part of a larger overall PR project/exercise."

possible?
Peer comment(s):

agree Rachael Alexander : this covers Jim's point too regarding not being too specific although I do agree with philgoddard too in that it is superfluous here. Viva Tom and being succint I say.

a mio parere l'iniziativa e lo svolgimento in questo caso non sono due azioni diverse, ma coincidono...quindi si potrebbe anche sintetizzare così

[leave out "e il suo svolgimento"]

Just "in order to publicise and document the project" is fine. "E il suo svolgimento" is redundant.
