English term

early

English to Turkish Art/Literary History Designating Parts of Historical Periods
Greetings,

Please, how do you say ‘early’ when referring to the early part of a historical period?

I quote:
Hall of Worthies or Jiphyeonjeon was the royal research institute for academic research and also served as advisory to the King in the late Goryeo and early Joseon period.

(On the creation of the Korean alphabet)

Best wishes, and many thanks,

Simon

Discussion

Recep Kurt Mar 1, 2012:
I agree with Mehmet, but I think we have to consider the time frame as well- we're probably talking about a period of 20-30-50? years here, so it might be OK to use "başında" (early) and "sonunda" (late) too, as this is not a long period (like "late Cretaceous period", where you have to use "geç")
Mehmet Ali Bahıt Mar 1, 2012:
I really do not like the fact that these words ("early" and "late") were so literally translated, and I had discussed this very issue with an academic for a previous translation I made.

If your source text is also an academic one (or close enough), this will be the best way to go, I'm afraid.

agree MG58 : "early period" için genellikle "erken dönem" karşılığı kullanılıyor ama "early Joseon period" çevirisi için "Joseon döneminin başlarında" demek bence daha uygun.

Much as I hate it, this really is the way it is used in academia.
