English to Malay Tech/Engineering Cooking / Culinary
How to differentiate a 'mill' (e.g. wet mill, dry mill), an attachment of a blender, from the blender itself, if 'blender' is 'pengisar'?

"Wet mill: Do not use the wet mill for mixing liquids and ice cubes. Use the blender."

Good idea. The fact that the mill is an attachment, "pengisar tambahan" make sense to me.

I agree with Ajali that blender must be pengisar because that's how people commonly understand it. So May, 'pengadun' is not an option here, also because all the other blender models for this brand have been previously translated as 'pengisar', so if this is 'pengadun', consumers would think that this is not a blender. 'mesin' is out too because this could also refer to the mills. I'm thinking of using 'pengisar tambahan basah/kering' or sth to that effect.

I like the term "pengadun" for blender but that not the term that people commonly understand it. "Pengadun" commonly refer to as mixer. even coffee grinder, we called it as pengisar kopi and not "pencanai kopi". We use "pengisar for everything.

I don't think it is that confusing. Just be specific and consistent with the term you use. If you use pengisar kering for dry mill as a reference to an item, just continue using it even if it is stated as "mill" in english.

Hi Ajali and thanks for your kind help. The problem I have is that the words appear throughout the manual, and sometimes the wet and dry mills are only referred to as 'mill'. Even if I specified pengisar kering and basah each time, it would be quite confusing to say, e.g. the above: Jangan gunakan pengisar basah sebaliknya gunakan pengisar. If possible I would like to use 2 completely different words altogether.

I think pengisar is the right word for mill.
cantuman pengisar kering, cantuman pengisar basah.
The whole machine is called "mesin pengisar"
Other words:
mesin pengadun - blender (although commonly accepeted as mesin pengisar)
mesin pemusing;
mesin pemutar

Here is what I found:
Blender = pengisar
pebble mill = pengisar kelikir
vertical bring mill = pengisar lubang tegak
food processor = pengisar makanan
juice maker = pengisar buah-buahan.
mixer = pengadun ( I think it should be pencampur but that is what they accepted)
So, I think to differentiate that, just call blender as pengisar and the \"mill\" use the specific term - pengisar kering, pengisar basah

Another option:
Because blender has been accepted (dbp)as \"pengisar\" and not to be confuse with mixer (commonly accepted as pengadun), why not use the full term \"mesin pengisar\" for blender and \"pengisar kering\" and \"pengisar basah\" for dry, wet mill.
I think it sound better : Jangan gunakan pengisar basah sebaliknya gunakan mesin pengisar\".

I think dbp accept mixer as pengadun
agree yam2u : mona, i'd go with hanim's 'pengadun' for blender, leaving you free to use ajali's suggestions of 'pengisar basah/kering' for the different mills.
