English term

block graph

English to Arabic Science Mathematics & Statistics Math
Definition: a graph that shows numbers or amounts as rectangles of different sizes.

This seems to be different from "bar graph" رسم بياني بالأعمدة which is a mathematical picture in which different amounts are represented by thin vertical or horizontal rectangles which have the same width but different heights or lengths

Ramadan Bekheet (asker) Apr 7, 2013:
Aha That's really helpful. Thanks a million Mr. Abdelmonem. I really appreciate your time.
Abdelmonem Samir Apr 7, 2013:
Abdelmonem Samir Apr 7, 2013:
blocks
block
building block

suggestion to be considered what about مخطط أعمدة (مقسمة إلى وحدات مستطيلة مختلفة الأحجام) to differentiate it from bar graph مخطط أعمدة (مقسمة إلى وحدات مستطيلة متساوية الأحجام)

Abdelmonem Samir Apr 6, 2013:
Totally disagree I totally disagree, the link clearly states:

"Use of Ms., Mrs., or Miss is at the preference of the bearer "

"an individual may be concurrently using both Ms. and Mrs.: Ms. professionally and Mrs. socially. "

However, I understand you may have a real personal experience, and it may be better to judge by personal experience than to judge by a web link. So I hand it to you :)
Lamis Maalouf Apr 6, 2013:

Problem solved I think Muhammad deleted the answer and posted a new one. Satisfied ? :)
Abdelmonem Samir Apr 6, 2013:
Mr and Mrs I found an interesting explanation about Ms and Mrs, it turned out to be a matter of preference. Here it is:

Use of Ms., Mrs., or Miss is at the preference of the bearer (the individual).

In the United States Ms. is the accepted/default form for women in business, but an individual may be concurrently using both Ms. and Mrs.: Ms. professionally and Mrs. socially.
Frequently those who use the traditional form for a married woman, Mrs. (Husband's first name + Surname), are offended to be addressed as Mrs. (Woman's first name + Surname) the traditional form for a divorced woman.
Others say that Mrs. (Woman's first name + Surname) is more useful because it acknowledges their marital status and provides their first name.

Lamis Maalouf Apr 6, 2013:
Neither It is Mrs. Maalouf :)
In the US, no one is called Mr./Mrs./ Ms. by his first name and this is an error committed by most colleagues.
As for the answer, I appreciate your good reason for not posting a new answer but in this site, answers can't be edited, so if the asker chooses that answer, it will not look right and may mislead those who will check the page later.
It seems that there is a new answer now.
Abdelmonem Samir Apr 6, 2013:
by the way Is it Ms or Mrs Lamis? :)
Abdelmonem Samir Apr 6, 2013:
yes Yes, but it was Muhammed's answer that led me to this suggestion. When I you saw his answer, I looked up AlMaany and found it.
Lamis Maalouf Apr 6, 2013:
Mr. Samir What you are suggesting is totally different. I think you need to post it as a new answer.

And, here too:

Now, perhaps you realize what the BLOCK means in Block Graph.

Block is intended to = Square.

At last, below you can see the translation stated clear within a relevant context:

Dear Ramadan,

Based on your definition, I think "رسم بياني كتلي" would do fine. Here, instead of having "bars" or "أعمدة", we have "blocks" or "كتل" of different sizes, again based on your definition.

Hope that helps.

I understand that "رسم بياني كتلي" is not an established term in Arabic. This is just my attempt to "coin" an acceptable translation in Arabic, based on the dictionary definition.

Maybe other colleagues can come up with a better translation. Wait and see.
Note from asker:
I'm helping with an E_A Math dictionary and I found that this dictionary definition could shed light on the difference between bar graph and block graph which are considered the same by many. In fact, there's nothing called رسم بياني كتلي in Arabic? This is just praiseworthy effort but I really seek to reach an equivalent translation.
