In cancer therapy, the use of another form of treatment in addition to the primary therapy.
For example, chemotherapy may be the primary treatment and radiation ¶therapy may be an ¶adjuvant ¶therapy.

Адъювантными называются методы, которые применяют ПОСЛЕ операции, в дополнение к ней.
Есть еще неоадъювантная терапия -- это та, которая проводится ДО операции.

Adjuvant chemotherapy. As a part of multimodality treatment, ¶adjuvant chemotherapy is administered after local ¶therapy of the primary neoplasm is completed. Though local therapy (operation, radiation therapy, or both) may control the site of primary disease, subclinical metastases can become manifest as later recurrence at distant sites. The aim of adjuvant chemotherapy is destruction of distant micrometastases—thereby preventing clinical metastases—followed by long-term survival and cures. The selection of patients for ¶adjuvant treatment is based on the risk of recurrence after primary ¶therapy alone. The risk-benefit ratio must be weighed carefully.
Адъювантная химиотерапия — важнейший компонент комплексного лечения злокачественных новообразований. Адъювантную химиотерапию назначают после устранения первичной опухоли (с помощью операции, лучевой терапии или комбинации этих методов) для ликвидации возможных, но не проявляющихся клинически метастазов. Итак, цель адъювантной химиотерапии — разрушить отдаленные мелкие метастазы и, таким образом, предотвратить рецидивы, существенно продлить жизнь больному или добиться полного излечения. Основной критерий для назначения адъювантной терапии — риск рецидива заболевания после устранения первичной опухоли. Принимая решение, следует оценить тяжесть побочных эффектов химиотерапии и соотнести ее с риском рецидивов.
