Em primeiro lugar

Portuguese to English Social Sciences Poetry & Literature
“Em primeiro lugar vem a dedicação, depois a habilidade.”
LEONARDO DA VINCI

I am looking for the English quotation, not just a translation of the Portuguese. I've been looking all morning but with no luck. Out of 18 quotations, I have found 15 so far

Discussion

Paul Dixon Jul 6, 2021:
Nothing along these lines I looked at a site with 98 quotes by da Vinci, found nothing containing these terms.
Maybe it wasn't da Vinci after all? Google does present the phrase in Portuguese ascribed to Da Vinci but nothing in English.
Mario Freitas Jul 5, 2021:
Indeed I have to agree. If you search for Da Vinci's quotes, there is nothing like that. But I found several of these images people make in the social media with this phrase in Portugues with Da Vinci's picture next to it, which likely means someone made it up and it spread all over.
Oliver Simões Jul 5, 2021:
Douglas I couldn't find any quotes along those lines. I wonder if it's a summary of a longer quote by him, or maybe something wrongly attributed to him. I see quote mismatches all the time. But anyway, I want to share this:

"Many are they who have a taste and love for drawing, but no talent; and this will be discernible in boys who are not diligent and never finish their drawings with shading." https://www.brainyquote.com/quotes/leonardo_da_vinci_542472

for starters/to begin with

You use to begin with when you are talking about the first stage of a situation, event, or process.

You use for starters when you mention something to indicate that it is the first item or point in a series.

First of all

It's what I'd use, but the other suggestions are good too.
