No client of mine has ever asked me to explain what kind of security measures I have in place. Some time before the 25th May 2018 (when the GDPR became enforceable) I asked my computer technician if I needed to change or improve my security practices in order to comply with it. The answer was no because I’m the only person who uses the computer and she had already implemented all the necessary protections.

I believe I did that in my Proz profile, it was something that needed to be done for the profile to be considered complete and at the time I thought it was important.

My partner is a computer person, so he installed my antivirus etc.

My clients don't work in sensitive areas, there's nothing military or top-secret in anything I translate, so I have never been asked about it.

I remember at the agency where I used to work, there was a question about security measures in a tender they were thinking of bidding for. The Sales Manager asked the computer whizz kid what she could put. He thought hard and said "well we put up the sign to say no unauthorised persons in the server room" (this was because the cleaning lady kept her bucket and mop in there, and often knocked the server plug out when putting them away).

A week or so later, the servers were hacked, with at least a third of company data being erased before they managed to do anything about it. At that point the boss finally decided to ask the computer whizz kid to do something about it (he'd been warning the boss of this kind of breach ever since he'd arrived).

What would be the point of setting up a secure IT system if you’re then going to tell all the world and his/her dog/bitch – including your clients – all about it?

The only thing any client needs to be told is that you comply with whatever minimum rules are in force in your jurisdiction (e.g. GDPR), and are relevant to the work done for that client. How you achieve that compliance is no-one's business except your own.

Nobody has ever asked.

But in case they're reading this, I generally lock the front door on the way out.
