An excuse sometimes offered by outsourcers asking for lower rates than mine is "Oh, but all our other translators work for that rate". This leaves me completely cold. My reply is "Well, so they may, but I don't".
Keep bashing the keys.

I DO provide discounts for high volumes of work. but when I mean high, I really mean HIGH, in particular multiples of 50k-words. I got requests by companies for my preferred rate for a "huge" assignment of 30k-words, and I told them that with such a volume they did not qualify for a discount.

Now, I know that a large volume it is NOT less work, but on the other hand I very often manage to achieve many repetitions or partial matches that allow to proceed faster (as i do not offer Trados discounts). And, on top of that, I am not busy looking for other jobs. So the trade-off is more or less that I earn slightly more than what I would earn at my normal rate but only working from time to time, and spending time looking for new assignments. Managing a large assignment implies a lot of self-discipline, including management of terminology, consistency between different documents, and in particular time-management (specially because I offer a discount in the event of late delivery), but I prefer it over many small jobs.

However, I do NOT accept any proposed low rate, the customer has to pay MY (possibly discounted) rate. I have a discount rate of 0.01€/word for every 50,000 words (i.e., a 100k-customer would get a discount of 0.02€/word), BUT with a minimum. I do not work below that minimum. Period. I once got a 3 MILLION word assignment (lasted almost 3 years), and the customer paid my minimum. If a customer offers a rate below my minimum, I tell him politely what my rate it, and he can take it or leave it.

Fully agree, Jenny. The discounts I offer for large volumes are MY discounts. If others want to work for less, that's their good right. But it's not an excuse to lower our own rates.
