Spanish term

oscuros sones

Spanish to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
This is the opening paragraph of a text by an Argentine art critic:

En los albores del siglo XXI muchos se preguntaron si el tercer milenio traería bendiciones o catástrofes, un mundo nuevo, una sociedad más justa, una humanidad igualitaria o los oscuros sones del apocalipsis.

Dark sounds seems so literal...might he be getting at something else? A more apt metaphor in English?
Thanks

ominous rumblings/sounds

You could even use "hummings" but I'd use "ominous".

lugubrious and somber chords of Apocalypse, like the Death March of Saul...

Well, I am not sure if that is too "grim" (I actually like it!), but it could work "for words"... mmm..., I guess. :-)
