I think that the dichotomy here is between identifying oneself in one category (a black person, a Catholic, a woman, an American, etc...) or - as is the case today - in multiple categories.

Boundaries between formerly defined groups are becoming increasingly blurred. An increasing number of people feel they belong to several categories at the same time. They have multiple identities. They belong to several groups: they have multiple loyalties.

I see John's point. However, I don't think "diversity" provides an accurate translation of this concept.
