il me semble que la phrase est ironique ici. Le salon n'est pas grand, du coup si on y met un lit à deux places, on n'a plus d'autre choix que s'asseoir sur le lit.
A mon avis il faut éluder le "bedstitting room" qui fait écho à living room.
