Laylak’s selection of Fattal’s works includes ‘Jaffa Oranges,’ and ‘Silver Moon Over Akka Mosque.’ Both works were completed in 2014 and are acid-free marker on cardboard. Fattal clearly takes inspiration from the long heritage of Islamic book illumination. The use of a flattened perspective to depict architectural forms, illustrated in bright, vivid colours are highly reminiscent of Persian manuscript illustration—an art so renowned that it quickly expanded across the Arab world. Yet Fattal’s works are human and idiosyncratic—true personal meditations on space and light.
