Just to clarify - the source is using "geometric" here in its sense of a growth rate not in its sense of Geometry. So I'm suggesting translating as something like "popular discontent rising at increasing rates can be represented mathematically as a geometric progression".
We'd also say "exponentially" but that's less formal.
