Cereal packets, film subtitles, books, instructions: you don't have to look far to realise that translation is everywhere! As part of the EU's 50th birthday celebrations, the Commission is organising a competition to give young people a first-hand experience of what it's like to be a translator.
In October 2007, 17-year-olds will be able to take part in a translation competition being held on the same day in all 27 EU countries. Pupils can choose to translate a text from any one of the EU's 23 official languages into any other.
Their entries will then be judged by professional translators from the Commission's translation service. The 27 best budding translators, one from each member country, will receive a certificate and win, for themselves and one adult, a two-day trip to Brussels. During their stay, the winners will represent their school at a ceremony attended by Mr Leonard Orban, commissioner for multilingualism.
Watch this page: from mid-April, you will find the competition's website address. It will tell you how to enter and give you information on translation.

...one of those cases where the 1st prize is 2 days with the EC in Brussels, the 2nd prize 4 days and the 3rd prize 6 days. Only the EC would think that a trip to the Berlayment Building featured more highly on people's wish lists than watching paint dry.

I just about died of laughter reading your comment. Yeah, whooping it up in Brussels with Mom or Dad, jumpstarting one's career translating cereal boxes.
Joking aside, I'm seriously glad they are raising awareness with this competition for up-and-coming translators. I wonder about the details though: only 17-year-olds? What if I'm 16? Or do they mean a pupil at a certain type of secondary school? Do I have to be a citizen of an EU country, or just a resident, or...? I guess we'll have to wait until the details are announced in mid-April (but isn't it already almost May?)

The EU-buildings are just shining marble office buildings in a street which is a like a motorway on weekdays.
Downtown Brussels with the "Manneken Pis", the "Grand Place", "the "Rue des Bouchers" is the more touristic part.
Besides to become a EU-translator, you must first pass the Verbal and Numerical + the EU-knowledge test.
Only then, you can participate in the actual competition.

Are you sure translators have to do the Numerical test?
