pk,

I don't know ... the 1956 movie that has this title may have extended the original phrase to imply other meanings. I've never seen the movie. But from the description I found, it seems to be about a man who turns into a psycho in the pursuit of his idea of "perfection", albeit being in a constant heavily medicated state.

Some people live in a fantasy world, whether on medication or not. They believe they are invincible, and are always in the right. That creep of a guy who kipnapped Jaycee Dugard and held her captive for nearly 2 decades certainly had a distorted image of himself and thought he was "bigger than life".

Here's another interpretation by Babylon.com. IMO it might be the shade of meaning the original movie title was going after ...

http://dictionary.babylon.com/Larger_than_life

larger-than-life

Adjective
1. very imposing or impressive; surpassing the ordinary (especially in size or scale); "an epic voyage"; "of heroic proportions"; "heroic sculpture"

对, 一般情况下是这样讲的, 即 比喻一个人的 "光辉形象" 比实际生活中其本人要高大得多.

说起来咱中国人对 bigger than life 一点儿也不陌生; 君不见有很多人把活着的人奉若神明. 西方的偶像一般是要等到盖棺后才定论的.

Bernie Madoff Oct 19, 2009

Bernie Madoff's another good example of someone who had been "bigger than life" in the investment community, in a totally undeserving way of course. Instead he turned out to be a complete fraud.

It looks like they are now going after the unscrupulous crooks on Wall Street, what with the public outcry about insider trading, exorbitant executive bonuses, and what not.

电影的命题 Oct 20, 2009

Found this little blurb this morning. It's clear to me now that the 1956 movie's title used the phrase "bigger than life" in its original everyday sense. The main character in the movie felt that he was "bigger than life" and was invincible. He had a falsely exaggerated sense of his station in life and talked down to everyone around him. Nowadays people like that are aptly called a certain name that is probably better left unprinted

http://www.j4hi.com/Page13.html

BIGGER THAN LIFE (1956)

DIRECTOR: Nicholas Ray (REBEL WITHOUT A CAUSE)

STARS: James Mason, Barbara Rush, Walter Matthau, Roland Winters

SYNOPSIS: James Mason gets addicted to and abuses the hell out of prescription drugs in this Nic Ray cult classic. It's not campy but a well-made film that had to have balls back in 1956 to tackle this subject matter. After popping too many pills Mason feels he is "bigger than life" and talks down to everyone around him. His mood swings nearly drive him to violence. (Mason also produced the film.) WIDESCREEN!

"比生命更重要" 和 "高于生活" 或许是 字面翻的, 或许是端架子翻的. Either way, I would say the Chinese translation might need to be revisited after all these years. Something along the lines of "目中无人" or "唯我独尊" is more like it

一个偏重于随心所欲的乱涂乱画,我认为通常不是广告;
