Literally "introduce rigour into", but that doesn't sound too good.
I quite like "put on a rigorous footing", but it doesn't fit so well in the context, because the object, which would have to go between "put" and "on", is so long.
I think it really means providing a specific and coherent theoretical account of the relevant mental processes, which serves as a framework for understanding how emotions work.

The first meaning applies here, of course, and the word carries no suggestion of its subsidiary meanings in this context (nor does "rigor" in Spanish, of course, even though its primary meanings, as per the DRAE, are "excesiva y escrupulosa severidad" and "spereza, dureza o acrimonia". Any reader can see that those meanings are irrelevant here. So it is with "rigour" in English.)
The point is that thinking about emotions, like pyschology in general, is all a bit wishy-washy, but neurology makes it rigorous by giving them a precise and specific physical correlate (at least in theory).

I think that I would describe my understanding of this phrase in English in the following way:
Neuroeconomics and neuromarketing are relatively new disciplines that are beginning to crystallize understanding on the role of emotions...
I understand 'poner rigor' in this sense to mean: 3.to give a definite form or expression to (an idea, argument, etc) or (of an idea, argument, etc) to assume a recognizable or definite form
which is the meaning of 'crystallize' that applies.
I probably wouldn't use 'rigour' in English in this context because of its usuall association with severity and harshness, which I don't think is what is meant.
