Then, "Bondwomen" it will be!
Rachel Douglas Dec 9, 2010:
Info: English transl. published 1925 While the Cambridge History gives "Slaves," as I noted, the McGraw-Hill History of World Drama cites an English translation using the title rns gave, "Bondwomen," as appearing in 1925 in the anthology "Poet Lore." Here is a library card catalogue entry for that:

"The" should be omitted. My bad.
Note from asker:
Thanks a lot, rns. But I wonder was this play ever translated into English?

"Slaves"

FWIW, that's what the Cambridge History of Russian Literature calls it. I don't know whether that's their own idea, or if somebody titled a published translation like that.

slave-girls

At least that's how they translate the song title on Chaliapin's facebook (sic!!!):

the song of the slave-girls (невольницы) at the beginning ... Translation to English is left as an exercise for the readers! ...

I don't see why the play title should be translated differently.
