Russian term

Самостоянье человека – Залог величия его.

Russian to English Art/Literary Poetry & Literature
This is the context:

Два чувства дивно близки нам –
В них обретает сердце пищу –
Любовь к родному пепелищу,
Любовь к отеческим гробам.

На них основано от века
По воле Бога самого
Самостоянье человека –
Залог величия его.

Pushkin, 1830

Votes to reclassify question as PRO/non-PRO:

Non-PRO (1): Marianna Staroselsky

When entering new questions, KudoZ askers are given an opportunity* to classify the difficulty of their questions as 'easy' or 'pro'. If you feel a question marked 'easy' should actually be marked 'pro', and if you have earned more than 20 KudoZ points, you can click the "Vote PRO" button to recommend that change.

How to tell the difference between "easy" and "pro" questions:

An easy question is one that any bilingual person would be able to answer correctly. (Or in the case of monolingual questions, an easy question is one that any native speaker of the language would be able to answer correctly.)

A pro question is anything else... in other words, any question that requires knowledge or skills that are specialized (even slightly).

Another way to think of the difficulty levels is this: an easy question is one that deals with everyday conversation. A pro question is anything else.

When deciding between easy and pro, err on the side of pro. Most questions will be pro.

* Note: non-member askers are not given the option of entering 'pro' questions; the only way for their questions to be classified as 'pro' is for a ProZ.com member or members to re-classify it.

In agreement with Marianna on that one. I would love to see other translators' thoughts and suggestions - it would be very interesting indeed.
Marianna Staroselsky Feb 12, 2007:
Evgueni, it's too bad this question was closed right after the 1st answer, it would have been fun to have a chance to answer it! Generally it's nice when askers keep a question open for 24 hours to give more people around the world a chance to respond.

Self-identity of man - the pledge of his greatness

This is a definition of "самостоянье" that I found: "Опыт человека — это он сам, его самость, — его самостоянье. Самостоянье — это духовное освоение человеком того испытания, которое посылает ему судьба. Это и есть его судьба, его жизненный путь, а значит найденный и созданный им смысл собственной жизни. Самостоянье есть та сторона человека, которая создана им самим за вычетом того, что он воспринимает в существующей культуре. Самостоянье есть его собственная индивидуальная культура, которая действенна только для него".

Individuality: mankind's glory song

Or to keep the cadence:
Individuality of man - his glory song

Also maybe:
Individuality of man - the voice of his glory
Note from asker:
Sorry Marianna, you are right, the next time I will wait 24 hours before closing the question. Your answer is very suitable. Thank you for your help!

agree Rustam Nasyrov : My version was "A Sense of Self". What do you think?

Nice, "sense" is a bit vague but I suppose it depends on what you're going for.
