В моем документе эти выражения встречаются очень часто, например:
"Уд является инструментом высокой традиции, имеет богатую историю, высокий статус в обществе, строгие каноны исполнения и обучения игре на нем."
"Скрипка предстает здесь как своеобразный результат "снижения" традиции, т.к. своим происхождением обязана не народным истокам, а "офольклориванию" инструмента...
Имеется ввиду, что инструменты низкой традиции - это народные инструменты, а высокой традиции - это, соответственно инструменты, имевшие ненародное происхождение. Все понимаю, но никак не могу придумать, как это по-ангилйски сказать. Может, есть устоявшийся термин?

classical vs. folk
It depends on your reading audience. You could describe the folk tradition as "vulgar." For an uneducated audience, this would sound like you are saying that folk instruments are somehow obscene; but an educated audience would understand that it means "common," "popular," or "folk."

In America, the "classical tradition" is understood to be the high tradition. The violin is considered to be a classical instrument. However, if you call it a "fiddle," then everybody knows you're talking about the same instrument, but playing folk, country, or bluegrass music.
