Russian to English Art/Literary Music lyrics

Discussion

Froj (asker) Feb 19, 2007:
жаль но я никак не научусь остановиться разгоняюсь загоняюсь как отпущенная птица Maybe it gets easier if I add the preceding sentence (though I already now what it means)

I am flittering and fluttering about like bird just let out of its cage.

Re Alexander's comment:

I think of a falcon that has just been released more as bobbing and weabing around. "Flittering and fluttering" was an alliterative attempt to do something kind of parallel to the Russian, but the two sets of movements are different: bobbing and weaving would be a little more directed...

weaVing above.

In the context above, I would definitely use flittering and fluttering

I will never learn to stop flittering and fluttering....
Note from asker:
it's very hard for me to judge because i'm not good enough in russian nor in english. I'm not even sure what flittering and fluttering means exactly. And I have only one answer to choose. but... thank you

Thank you.
agree Alexander Demyanov : 2 notes: 1. Shouldn't it be "like A bird"? 2. "Отпущенная" doesn't necessarily mean "out of its cage". One image coming to mind is that of a hunting falcon (let go off a hunter's hand.//Or "let go"

Thanks. Alexander. 1. Yes. Urk! 2. after I posted the answer, I thought maybe better just to say ...like a bird just set free.

agree Olga Cartlidge : Then it should be bang on. I doubt if a closer hit would be possible. // "Flittering and fluttering" sounds very good with the alliteration thrown in.

Hi Olga. Thank you for the comment. I used the confidence level partly because of a little bit losoe translation, but in ENglish flutter can definitely have a connotation of breathlessness and energy expended to excess.
