Я тут не разбираю то, что автор хочет выразить.

Речь идет о том, пойдет ли рассказчик (я) на предложенное двумя мужчинами путешествие в будущем или нет. Вообще он не хочет, но все-таки он видит что-то завлекательное в нем...

Тут же я прислушивался невольно к названиям, звучащим тревожно и странно, и жалел в глубине души, что все это зря, и зовут меня конечно же не всерьез. А что, если всерьез? – От этих двоих можно ждать чего угодно... Какое было бы приключение! – Обидно, ***что мне с ними не по пути.*** Они-то, наивные, считают, что я не смогу отказаться, что я уже поддался и согласился, да и наверное многие согласились бы на моем месте, но я занят, занят, поймите – придется как-нибудь в другой раз.

Спасибо всем за время, помощь и объяснение!

we follow different routes or any variation of these. Poputchik in the ordianary and the political meaning of the word - тот, с кем тебе по пути - someone walking beside you

This feels to me like a figurative use - not on the same wavelength/track, don't see eye-to-eye etc.

Речь может идти как о пути (маршруте) следования, так и о расхождении интересов, целей. Думаю, в обоих случаях можно использовать данное выражение.

There are combinations like "travelmates"," journey mates" etc

This guy says he can't go with them, he feels something like "It's a shame I can't join them, their way is not mine this time"

disagree Alexander Demyanov : I think this generally means "we can't be pals"//By your logic you can be called "snowman"//Just in case: "can't be mates" also has a meaning of "can't mate". You weren't after that one, were you?//True, it's not. The thing is, "mate" doesn't work here.

/ You surprise me, what about deskmate, classmate and running mate??/ Words have meaningS / It's not like "Seen one, seen them all" - look up "travelmate, jogging mate" or whatever else. The word does have the meaning "companion for a period of time".
