Russian term

групповой трансформатор

Russian to English Tech/Engineering Electronics / Elect Eng
As described here: http://www.ngpedia.ru/id522539p1.html

Yet again, Multiran's "group transformer" is not convincing.

Thanks!

Discussion

Igor Blinov Jan 15, 2013:
I agree with amended Anton's translation - hree-phase bank of single-phase transformers
Alex Marshall (asker) Jan 15, 2013:
And these transformers actually supply "трех- и однофазных электроприемников", so I don't see how the number of phases matters here. There are no banks of transformers either.
Alex Marshall (asker) Jan 15, 2013:
Let me give you more context: ... питание от этой системы через групповые или индивидуальные трансформаторы... So the distinction here is between transformers supplying several electric loads (common transformers, as I see it) and those supplying (dedicated to) individual electric loads.
Alex Marshall (asker) Jan 15, 2013:
I'm leaning towards... ... "common transformer". Any thoughts on this?

shared transformer

Alex, now that you have given a different context, I'd have to give a different answer. To me, "shared" sounds more natural here than "common" (as opposed to "dedicated").

By the way, I'd advise you to steer clear of ngpedia.ru unless you really know what you are doing. It gives you a random heap of automatically generated book excerpts containing a given search work, whith are totally unrelated to each other, yet merged into a single page without any separators and without human checking. So, some phrases are quoted totally out of context and may cause a great deal of confusion.

three-phase transformer bank

For three-phase power, one can either use a three-phase transformer with the windings for all the phases on the same core (three-limb, five-limb, or shell), or use a three-phase _bank_ consisting of three identical single-phase transformers. The latter arrangement is known as "групповой трансформатор" in Russian.
Peer comment(s):

agree Igor Blinov : it is rather a "single-phase transformer bank"

Thanks. Neither is fully unambiguous - to be exact, we'd have to say "a three-phase bank of single-phase transformers"
