Russian to English Science Archaeology
This one is throwing me. This part of the text is discussing the history of archaeological study in Russia in the 1960s and beyond. Short articles of a publishing and general nature?

The full paragraph is below:

neutral Alexander Demyanov : So "публикационная" doesn't have a topic and "topical" is automatically "проблемная"?

4 KudoZ points awarded for this answer. Comment: "Thanks. I didn't realise that this question would be quite the response that it did. Seemed to stir up quite a hornets' nest! I think we can agree that the articles are short, rather than minor (minor being suggestive of their significance rather than length). I think the word "topical" fits perfectly, which is why I have selected this answer. Thanks everyone!"

general and issue related articles

Example sentence:

It is broken down into three sections - General Books, General Articles and Issue Specific Articles.

Peer comment(s):

agree Olga Cartlidge : Indeed.

neutral Alexander Demyanov : I beileve this suggestion has the same problems as Valery's: "публикационные" can well be issue related. "Issue related" doesn't make an article "проблемная"//Of course not "публицистические". I never offered such understanding.

Thank you for your comment
Можно "short(er) articles meant for publication and raising (certain) issues".

Thank you, Tatiana. I am sure a good translation will be coined eventually as a result of combined efforts.
agree Olga Cartlidge : Whoever has suggested "issue - raising", I agree. "Minor" would mean "not ground breaking, not the cutting edge, unimportant" so it would be better replaced by "short".

Thank you, Olga. I agree with "short" being a better word to use here.

short articles with research highlights and commentaries

Indeed it seems instead of "публикационного" they tried to say "публицистического". Every article in a journal is meant for publication so "meant for publication" does not seem right to me. By "публицистический" they seem to mean publications that are not regular articles, but those that give overviews, general reports, or devoted to general discussion of a field, without doing any proper experimental work. So my suggestion for this is "research highlights".

As to "проблемного характера": this seems to mean "brief comments on a particular problem/issue".

Agree with Tatiana: *short* articles, to show the difference to regular articles in a journal.

My two cents.
Peer comment(s):

neutral Alexander Demyanov : While "публикационного" is not the best word choice on the author's part, I don't think they meant "публицистического". The latter would have to do with current day issues rather than archaeological study.//Still, no "публицистика"

I think "current day issues" is what is meant here: reviews, reports, etc. This is more likely than "having to do with publishing"

Short articles they are...

Now, I believe "публикационного характера" are more of informational articles, i.e. their purpose is to publish some newly found facts, while "проблемного характера" discuss some unresolved questions of the field

To elaborate:
"Проблемная статья" will define a problem/question realted to the field and offer a discussion of it and suggest some possible solutions.
"Публикационная статья" will mostly aim at sharing findings.

That said, both designations (which do seem quite arbitrary) may way relate to articles focusing on some narrow topics or covering wide range of topics or issues. That's why any wording including "...specific..." would be misleading.
Peer comment(s):

2 hrs
Not even treating your "иногда", the particular original talks about PUBLISHED articles of both designations.//Where do you see me talking about contraposition or exclusion? 2 (quite arbitrary) designations are LISTED

small pieces like mere statements or issue raising types

Scientists in the USSR were supposed to have a certain amount of "publications" in scientific periodicals in order to get a degree and then to confirm their scientific "validity".
A "mere statement" says that a series of experiments resulted in this and that...
Any results that deviate from the predictions may be described in the issue raising part of the same publication, or separately...
Same types of publications could be written analytically, summing up the publications about the experiments carried out by others.
