Racking my brain for a good equivalent. The occasion is a religious school anniversary. Need to make an invitation to an evening event, which will be done Russian style: everybody sitting in rows, the Rector etc. on the platform, sort of conference setting, yet more informal, with words of greeting, flowers, possibly even videos or singing etc. etc. So what would you write in an invitation? 'You are cordially invited to....' (торжественный вечер, посвященный 25-летию института). Party, soiree, meeting, evening, event, session - all fail... Help! :)

Works for me. Or you could leave out "evening of."

: Absolutely, take the "evening" part out. "celabration of our blah blah" works all right.

to celebrate the occasion of our 25th anniversary
I like "evening" as well to describe these events, but the above is a very standard and formal way of saying it.

the Black Tie Gala Evening
Black Tie:
Term for formal evening attire, usually a black tuxedo jacket, black tuxedo pants, white shirt, black cummerbund and tie, or matching tie, cummerbund or vest, and formal shoes (The term "black tie" on an invitation connotes formality and indicates that you must wear a tuxedo). "Black Tie Invited" means tuxedos are preferred, but dark suits are acceptable.

Note from asker:
Gala Evening is funny enough for a Russian-type school event, even without the black tie :) |

Susan Welsh
: If you put the "black tie" in there, people will take it literally--that they need to get a tuxedo. For a school?

The Misha
: Back in my days, it was called "otsebyatina", but you probably wouldn't know what that means.

Note from asker:
I doubt that you can invite people to a 'function'... |
I believe 'function' is used as a generic term, not as a name for a specific event. I have looked up some of you links and it seems to be the case there as well. At least I have not found any exceptions. |
Discussion
You kind of have me intrigued here, to the point that I even went and had a look at your profile - because let me tell you, you certainly do "have the English". And you never lived in an English-speaking country? So where did it come from?
