taki zgrabny eufemizm dla nazwania "lesbijki"

Discussion

Pawel Michniak (asker) May 6, 2006:

There are as many terms as there are people to use them or be defined by them! "Differently orientated' is another, for example. However, each term says something slightly different and, given the wealth of terms, surely the ideal would be a wealth of translatiions? Above all, the suggestion that I've given is used by gay women and men who are friends of mine.

Thank you!
neutral Ensor : it crossed my mind to translate it directly, like you did, but I'm not really sure if 'a woman who loves differently' can be immediately understood as 'a lesbian'; she could be a dog lover, a tree lover, a platonic lover, etc.

Yes, it could be understood like that. Christians also talk about 'loving differently'. However, I chose 'love differently' not only as a direct translation, but also as a phrase used by gay women and men who are close friends of mine.

vagitarian / tribade

troche inny rejestr, lecz nie znam co by moglo oddac polska wersje;
ew. moze: "the love that dare not speak its name" (courtesy of Alfred Douglas), choc to sie moze odnosic rowniez do mezczyzn;

"vagitarian"
--a code word for lesbian
Peer comment(s):

neutral Caryl Swift : From what I can find on the web,'vagitarian'seems sometimes to carry rather abusive and/or vulgar connotations.'Tribade' is absolutely correct, but as you said, isn't it a somewhat formal register, given the much more gentle original?

neutral Caryl Swift : 'Gay'applies to both women and men,but it's simply another way of saying homo- as opposed to heterosexual.A gay person can also decribe her/himself as someone'who loves differently',(it appears on many websites).Why limit the range of possibilities?

Reading "someone like Debby" as simply a euphemism for "lesbian" may bring these ... In addition to suggesting Debby's unconventional sexual orientation, ...

Peer comment(s):

neutral Caryl Swift : I agree that this is an oft-used expression giving a perfectly accurate description of lesbianism.But I'm not sure that it says the same thing as the phrase in the question.

Well, it's a euphemism, a slightly humorous one that sort of mocks political correctness. But you rarely find an informal euphemism that does say exactly the same thing in two languages.

gay

By going for a euphemism you run the risk of overdoing it. 'Women of unconventional sexual orientation' sounds like polysyllabic humour, no normal person knows what a tribabe or vagitate is, not yet anyway, whereas kochająca inaczej is understandable for everyone. Of the other choices I like Caryl's best women who love differently, but still depending on the context I would stick to plain old 'gay'.
