Discussion

Pesach Shelnitz Mar 8, 2010:
There are three differences between the two answers currently posted. 1) Both "beech block" and "beechblock" are used, but "beech block" is much more common.
2) No indication was given in the original question that there is a lever. Is there a lever?
3) If there is a level, "lock" would be more suitable than "latch."

breech block latch

In any gun, the word סדן is the breech. The word תפוח is commonly used to refer to any moving assembly and is thus used suitably here to describe a breech block. Common tank cannons are loaded from behind by inserting a projectile through the breech block opening. The word סגר refers to the latch that holds the breech block in the closed position after the projectile is loaded.

breechblock lever lock

If my memory serves me correctly this is the lock (preferably latch - but you used lock for other parts) of the lever used to pull down the breechblock for the purpose of loading the turret's main (usually 105mm) gun
