French term

automoteur en stationnement

French to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping coupling operations
These trains have an automatic coupler.
Coupling can be carried out on:
- un automoteur en stationnement
- un automoteur en maintien de service
- un automoteur avec une cabine de conduite en service.

I'd like to know what the difference is between these modes (especially the first two). I'll post another query for "en maintien de service".

This forum http://www.cheminots.net/forum/lofiversion/index.php/t10292.... (msg posted at 21/11/2007 10:43) refers to both terms, but doesn't help with the translation!!

"Sinon l'ICE est TOUJOURS en maintien de service en fait. Dès que tu vérouilles la boite à levier , il est systèmatiquement mis en maintient de service ; si tu veux le mettre en stationnement, tu as une procédure à effectuer mais par défaut, l'engin se stationne toujours en maintien."

Discussion

CMJ_Trans (X) Jun 10, 2008:
no because they may be applying the track brakes
David Goward (asker) Jun 10, 2008:
Thanks, CMJ TBH, I hadn't realised that the term "parking brakes" was used on trains also. I was wondering if the difference was having the brakes applied or not applied (although coupling with the brakes off is hazardous).
CMJ_Trans (X) Jun 10, 2008:
these are all types of braking - you have holding brakes, parking brakes, service brakes...... so they are talking about what is keeping the train at halt

you may wish to rephrase but this is the principle, for the same reason as given with the answer to the other question
