French term

contre-jetée

French to English Tech/Engineering Transport / Transportation / Shipping port
Mentioned as distinct from "jetée principale":
"étude des travaux de confortement de la contre-jetée".

I'm thinking it could be a pier adjacent to the main one.

Selected

secondary pier or jetty or breakwater or N/E/S/W pier

pier, jetty, breakwater, mole all serve the same purpose...

GENERALLY (and according to the OED):
- piers are big, protect a water from waves, can be tied up to and landed on.
- jetties are small piers.
- breakwaters protect a water from waves only.
- moles are piers made of stone.

THEREFORE:
- If the structure cannot be landed on it is a breakwater.
- If it can and is small it is a jetty, if it is big it is a pier.
- If the contre-jetée is smaller than the main one you could call the big one the pier and the smaller one the jetty.

HOWEVER, we generally talk about the geographic position of piers in order to differentiate between them (for me this the best solution, but perhaps the required information is not available to you):

The first, the cast iron North Pier, was designed by Eugenius Birch and opened in 1863. Five years later the South Jetty opened, but only became popular ...

lee breakwater

May be applicable only in specific cases, but this is the term used for the "contre-jetée" at La Condamine Harbour in Monaco (where I sail every weekend, don't you know ;-) ).
