canaulogue

French to English Other Geography Canaux de Bourgogne
This is an expert in canals. But how can I translate this into English, please?

canal expert / canal enthusiast

Either of these, depending on the emphasis implied by the context. I am pretty sure there is no equivalent (such as "canalogist") in English. If there were, it would probably have been used here:

"The World Canals Conference is the opportunity to bring together hundreds of canal enthusiasts, professionals and scholars from around the world, to exchange good practices on canals"
http://inlandwaterwaysinternational.org/world-canals-confere...

"Sonia Rolt was an author and canal expert in her own right"
http://www.ltcrolt.org.uk/sonia.htm
Note from asker:
Thank you both, Charles and Helen. I think I would choose enthusiast, as this seems to be the case in my context.
Peer comment(s):

agree Helen Hagon : I have lived on the banks of the Leeds to Liverpool canal for much of my life, and have never encountered a specialist term. I would say that an 'expert' is a professional or academic, while an 'enthusiast' does it as a hobby.

Thanks, Helen! If you haven't heard one, there almost certainly isn't one. As you say, that's the distinction; I gave both because the fairly scanty references I found to "canaulogues" seemed to include both kinds.
agree Jean-Claude Gouin : a canal enthusiast ...

canal specialist

Another possibility, probably implying a professional rather than a hobbyist. Without more context, we don't know which your man/woman is.
Note from asker:
Thank you. The context isn't more help as the canal enthusiast or canal specialist is not the target of the text, so to say.
