Ha megkérdezzük az utca emberét, az extrudálás szó hallatán sokan komplex ipari technológiára gondolnak, holott az egész folyamat egyetlen mondattal is könnyen szemléltethető. Az extrudálás során műanyag granulátumból egy felmelegített csigaorsó segítségével képlékeny anyagot képezünk, és azt átsajtoljuk egy matricán, így az felveszi a formázónyílás alakját.

The plastics extrusion process is used to manufacture objects from a single continuous sheet of melted plastics. Typical products include window frames, plastic piping, film, insulation, and wire coating. When a product requires a long solid stream of material in an unbroken line, then extrusion is the process of choice and works very well. This process begins with plastic granules that are added to a hopper, often with colorant and other materials added on an as-needed basis. The plastic is fed through a tube containing a screw. The friction from the turning screw effectively heats and melts the plastic which is then extruded into a mold.

Types of Plastic Extrusion

There are several different types of extrusion and each has its own characteristic problems. Extrusion coating layers an additional coat of plastic on an existing surface of paper, film, or foil. Coextrusion involves laying multiple layers of plastic on top of each other. Each layer’s thickness is controlled by the rate of extrusion and the amount of heat that is individually applied. Overjacking extrusion is used to coat wires. It is possible to achieve great control that allows for different levels of adhesion for different types of wiring. The tubing extrusion process is regularly used to manufacture parts for the plumbing and automotive industry, while blown-film extrusion is typically used for the thin plastic film used for packaging and shopping bags. Finally, sheet extrusion is used when large plastic surfaces are required but are too thick for the blown film process. Special dies are created for the sheet extrusion process to direct the flow of the plastics and ensure that the cavities are completely filled.

- Szigetelő extrudálás:

Ez az eljárás lehetővé teszi egy második réteg polimer felvitelét a meglévő anyagra. Leggyakrabban használt ilyen művelet a vezetékek szigetelése. A szigetelő exturdálásnak két fő fajtája létezik; burkolatképző, és adhéziós. Burkolásos szigetelésnél az olvadék nem ér hozzá a vezetékhez, egészen a matrica belső részéig. Adhéziós szigetelésnél a hatékony adhézió érdekében az olvadék már jóval a matrica előtt magas nyomáson lép kontaktusba a vezetékkel. A választás tehát egyszerű: ha nincs szükségünk közvetlen adhézióra a vezeték és a szigetelés között, akkor burkolásos extrudálást használunk, egyébként adhéziósat.
