What is the Renewables Obligation?
The Renewables Obligation (RO) and the Renewables Obligation Scotland (ROS) were introduced on 1st April 2002. They place an obligation on all licensed electricity suppliers to produce evidence that they have sourced a specified proportion of their electricity supplies from renewable energy sources.
What is a Renewable Obligation Certificate (ROC)?
Suppliers are required to produce evidence of their compliance with this obligation to the Office of Gas and Electricity Markets (OFGEM). Evidence can be via certificates, referred to as Renewable Obligations Certificates (ROCs). Each ROC represents one megawatt hour (1,000,000 units) of electricity generated from eligible sources.
