el hiato abraza el endoscopio
Spanish to English
Medical
Medical (general)
Gastroenterology - endoscopy
This is from an endoscopy report for a patient who suffered a food impaction.
ESTOMAGO: ... el piloro es central y permeable al paso del endoscopio, a la maniobra de retroversion *el hiato abraza el endoscopio* ...
What does this mean/how do we say it in English? My guess is that it means that the hiatus is tight, it's not excessively wide. Please confirm or correct this guess, and help me with the appropriate medical terminology.
Thanks for your help.

: The tissue surrounding the opening 'gripped' or perhaps 'enveloped' -- just wondering if there's enough strength in the tissue to firmly grip the endoscope. Hernias happen with the tissue is weak.

normal LES/EGJ on retroflexed view
Based on Chema's assessment, I would suggest a more general, less "picturesque" statement.
From the sample reports I found on the web, this would be an exceedingly comprehensive statement already; usually all normal areas/findings seem to be totally omitted to keep matters short...

¡Ah! ¿Tu hablas aleman? My active Spanish is very poor, unfortunately, as I was never immersed in a Spanish-speaking environment. // We are at par then, it seems ;-))

Hill classification
A Hill classification of hiatal patency/incompetence exists which seems to be the basis for the Spanish characterization "abraza el endoscopio":
"In brief, we graded the valve as viewed through the retroflexed endoscope as follows:
Grade I. A musculomucosal fold that adheres closely to the scope through all phases of respiration and is 3 to 4 mm in length.
Grade II: Slightly less well defined and shorter, opens occasionally but closes promptly and is competent.
Grade III. Opens frequently, is poorly defined, and is frequently accompanied by a hiatal hernia.
Grade IV. Stays open, no well defined fold is appreciated, and is always accompanied by a hiatal hernia."
https://core.ac.uk/download/pdf/81197142.pdf
Beside the ones liz quoted, a few other authors have used the same imagery/terminology, e.g.:
"Endoscopic valve criteria included the lip (thin vs broad), body (length in centimeters), anterior (absent, shallow, or deep), and posterior (absent, shallow, or deep) grooves, lesser curve appearance (narrow or wide), adherence to the scope on retroflexion (loose, moderate, or tight), effect of respiration (laxity at any time during respiration), valve "type" (flat or nipple), intraabdominal location being present as the normal finding, repair position 3 cm proximal to the gastroesophageal junction, and the unique appearance characteristics specific to each surgical repair."
https://www.78stepshealth.us/reflux-surgery/endoscopic-asses...
Most or all of these occurrences are from the scientific literature on surgical repair of gastroesophageal hernias, however, I am not sure if the "Hill classification" would be referred to in a 'normal' upper endoscopy report.

Discussion
Y qué me dices sobre esto, por favor: https://www.proz.com/kudoz/spanish-to-english/medical-genera...
Normal LES tone [normal or adequate LES closure] on retrograde view is basically what I would expect to read in English. Unluckily, I have not been able to find any specific example in English describing that (apparent) normal tone of the esophagogastric junction (as per how it looks closing around the endoscope's tube).
Hope it helps anyhow!
