Discussion

SJLD Sep 15, 2011:
Use of present tense in patient notes in English is to be avoided in most cases.
Merry Foxworth Sep 14, 2011:
typed and crossmatched usually stated this way

Two units of packed red (blood) cells were cross-matched...

Two units of packed red (blood) cells (abbr. PRBC) were cross-matched and collected/called off/retrieved...(make your choice).

Red cell concentrate is also possible, but less frequent (at least in my perception).

German term (edited): Zwei EK werden gekreuzt

two red cell concentrates were cross-matched

agree Siegfried Armbruster : 2 PC cross-matched and ordered

Yes, Siegfried, 'ordered' seems like a better fit than 'obtained'. 'Packed cells' is also good. Thanks a lot.
agree olympio (X) : "Two units of..." would be better, IMO
26 mins
Thanks, olympio
agree Eugenia Robinson (X) : '...are cross-matched'. Note that '...werden gekreuzt' is present tense.

Two erythrocyte concentrates are crossmatched and datamatched.

Prior to transfusion, a crossmatch is performed as a final check for incompatibility. (Link 2)

Peer comment(s):

disagree Siegfried Armbruster : I prefer to have the PCs cross-matched and available / having them datamatched does not help the patient at all

disagree Lirka : do not agree with "concentrates" and "datamatched"

2 units of PRC/PRBC are cross-matched and released on request

EK = Erythrozytenkonzentrat = packed red cells (PRC)/packed red blood cells (PRBC)

kreuzen = cross-match

http://www.proz.com/kudoz/german_to_english/medical_general/...

Transfuse two units of packed red blood cells
immediately. Use cross matched blood if
available; otherwise use type specific or O
negative packed red blood cells. Call the blood
bank with the patient’s name, medical record
number and DOB to request the two units.
Bring a “request for release of blood” form for
cross matched blood.
http://docs.google.com/viewer?a=v&q=cache:DwrrIxpHJccJ:www.h...

A median of 2 units of packed red cells was cross-matched per patient. Twenty-three patients (21.7%) required a transfusion in the postoperative period. Fourteen of these patients required a second cross-match sample because their transfusion occurred more than 48 h after the original request.
http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/1491372

Once a blood order was made, surgeons usually requested
preparation of at least 1 unit of packed red cells. The
blood bank followed the type and screen policy,
whereby units were not crossmatched until an actual
need for transfusion occurred.
