In fields like printing and photography, an 'épreuve' has nothing to do with a trial or test, but is indeed a 'proof' — a copy of something that is sent for approval and/or correction; this term can apply equally well to graphics etc. and actual text documents

Of course, you can't use the same word when you come to the verb 'to proof' — here you might need 'validation', perhaps?

'ébauche' means a 'rough', and as you say, doesn't specifically imply that it is for review. The exact word you need here is indeed 'épreuve', which does imply that!

I'd agree with 'reviseur' for 'reviewer', but please note that this second term ought to have been the subject of a separate question (KudoZ rule 2.3).
