German term

plasmatische Blutkomponenten

German to English Medical Medical (general) Hämatologie
From a medical study:

Diese Studie befasst sich mit der Qualität der aus Blutspenden gewonnenen zellulären oder plasmatischen Blutkomponenten.

Cellular blood components is a commonly used expression, but plasmatic blood components seems to be very uncommon. What should I say instead?

Discussion

Gudrun Maydorn (X) (asker) Dec 7, 2010:
plasma Thanks, MMUlr, I think you have hit the nail on the head. Blood is composed of plasma and several types of blood cells. Therefore the expression cellular blood components makes sense, while plasmatic blood components doesn't - it is simply plasma.
David Tracey, PhD Dec 3, 2010:
Philosophical point MMUlr's entries raise an interesting point - are we translating what the author actually said, or what we think he *ought* to have said?
I think 'plasma blood components' is a more accurate literal translation, whereas 'non-cellular blood components' is maybe what he should have said. But it is often a matter of judgment as to the right balance between a literal translation, and an interpretation of what the author intended or should have said.
MMUlr Dec 2, 2010:
Seltsam Ich finde "plasmatische Blutkomponenten" auch deutsch sehr komisch formuliert - es ist schlicht die Fraktion "Plasma" vs. "Blutzellen".

Aufs Englisch heruntergebrochen:
http://www.americasblood.org/go.cfm?do=page.view&pid=12

"One unit of blood can be separated into several components: red blood cells, plasma, platelets and cryoprecipitate."

Very simple: plasma :-)

Anne Schulz Dec 2, 2010:
"...cellular blood components and plasma components from donated blood"?
NKW (X) Dec 2, 2010:
Might "This study deals with the quality of cellular or plasma blood components obtained from donated blood." work?
Gudrun Maydorn (X) (asker) Dec 2, 2010:
Perhaps this might work on its own, but I also have to incorporate zellulär into the same sentence...
NKW (X) Dec 2, 2010:
Possibly "blood plasma composition" - a paraphrase, but one that appears to capture the full meaning of the source text.

non-cellular blood components (-> plasma)

vs. cellular components

(see my entry in the discussion box).

Maybe like this:
Quality of ... cellular and non-cellular blood components (blood cells and plasma).

--------------------------------------------------

But maybe this is not as simple as I thought ... see this interesting information about blood components:

http://ahdc.vet.cornell.edu/clinpath/modules/coags/comp.htm

So there are several components derived from blood plasma ... IMO the Asker will have to decide based on further context of the original text.
