Spanish term

hacer fama y echarse a dormir

Spanish to English Marketing Medical: Pharmaceuticals Training of medical representatives
Is this an expression in Spanish? Is there an equivalent in English? If anyone is familiar with it, I'd welcome your help in making it sound more like a saying and less like an awkward translation.

Para generarla, recuerde sobre todo crearse una reputación, un prestigio y mantenerlo. Eso de **“hacer fama y echarse a dormir”** ya no funciona en estos días, la competitividad y la competencia está muy fuerte y recuerde que vivimos en un mundo globalizado y dinámico, todos estamos luchando por “una receta más el día de hoy”.

Resting on your laurels hi muriel, I think the expression can stand on it's own, and usually does, as you don't rest on your laurels until you have already achieved something (the laurels are the leaves given to the original prizewinners of the olympic games). Translating literally you would say "getting famous / making a name for yourself then resting on your laurels" but you could also just put : "Resting on your laurels is dangerous in today's climate as......" Suerte :)

I think it's implicit to have made it to the top, but you could certainly translate it as achieving fame, becoming famous. Not also that "hacer fama y echarse a dormir" is not, as far as I know, a much used expression, it yields half a dozen hits on the web and does not show up in any dictionaries I have,

Saludos!
Note from asker:
So far so good, David, but how about the first part?
David, my first reaction was unfair. It seems to be a very good suggestion. I'm going to leave the question open a little longer because it's fun watching the comments.

Gracias
agree Alex Lago : This reflects the fact that you have risen to the top (if not you would not have the "laurels") and you are resting on them, very good choice
