What's OLETF Rat?

Otsuka Long Evans Tokushima Fatty (OLETF) rat is a useful animal model of type II diabetes with obesity. It was developed by Kawano et al. (1991, 1992) and has been maintained in the Tokushima Research Institute, Otsuka Pharmaceutical Co., Ltd. Our company has been providing the OLETF rat as useful resources for diabetes study. Please contact us if you would like to use this strain for your research project.

It shows a clinically relevant phenotypes of diabetes such as

hyperinsulinemia
hyperglycemia
insulin resistance
hypertriglycemia
mild obesity
It shows a sex-dependent manner in terms of diabetes ncidence.

100% penetrance of diabetes in male OLETF rats of 25 weeks
In light of genetics

polygenically-controlled diabetes
some critical genetic components revealed by extensive QTL analysis.
