Hallo,
Will you be able to translate to Spanish an English 200 word text of a personal add (posting my real estate property) and have it ready by Tuesday 25 July? If so, please give me a quote._
Regards,
John

Left the “John” in as it doesn’t really mean anything.
Is this the start of a scam? Is it worth an answer from my side or it would turn into a waste of time?
Additionally, is there anywhere I can find and check the messages sent to me directly via ProZ?
Thanks for your help.

Doesn't look like a scam Jul 22, 2023

Scammers usually don't limit themselves to 200 words.

You just need to make the person justify if they represent a company or an individual. I would ask for payment in advance by SEPA transfer or any other method you normally accept.

Hi David Jul 22, 2023

Could you please provide the IP address from the message you received? This would help to check the logs and find out something realistic besides the assumptions about scam/not scam.

Natalia

Hi Natalia Jul 22, 2023

Should I post the IP address just right here or should I sent it privately to the ProZ staff?

Thanks for confirming.

Thank you for the IP David Jul 22, 2023

The IP is one of recently added new subnets that don't allow (so far) to find the real location. But according to the logs, the guy has been sending emails to multiple users in Chinese, Arabic, Russian, French, Spanish, German.

My 'diagnosis' from what I see in the logs: this 'John' is clearly a scammer, so just forget him.

Best,
Natalia

Interesting Jul 22, 2023

Interesting about his activity and IP address.

It would still be interesting to know how he would react if given a quote, so we can know and understand what sort of scam it is.

Interesting Jul 23, 2023

So it looks like scammers have figured out that we will fall more easily if the number of words is small…

I actually did answer "him" as if it was a serious offer. Just to see what happens and report the reaction. I asked for more details and information about the job - usual stuff. No reply from "John" so far, nor do I expect it.

Thing is the text sounds very "natural" to me. It sounds as if someone who is not familiar with this industry was posting a job for the first time. Maybe that's the reason why my senses were screaming "scam, scam" while reading it.

Anyway, it seems to me very obvious that the scammers have sharpened their tools.

If that's the case, we'll just discover it when they post a €2,000 cheque for a €25 job instead.

It won't be a very effective scam if he never reacts. And maybe it isn't a scam and he just needs different languages for a one-off ad.

Scam? Jul 24, 2023

Scam or not, who would be willing to pick up tools for 200 words?

200 words Jul 24, 2023

If the client is willing to pay my minimum fee (some are), I don’t mind at all translating 200 words. In fact, I translate very regularly fruit juice labels and meat product labels and these sometimes have even less words. It’s a well-paid easy task. Of course, I prefer translating really long, interesting reports, but variety is the spice of life!
