I received an email from what appears to be a valid Blue Board outsourcer (with only one BB entry however) asking me if I would be interested in doing a volunteer translating, helping to translate a web page for one of the NGOs that this outsourcer works with. I received an email from what appears to be a valid Blue Board outsourcer (with only one BB entry however) asking me if I would be interested in doing a volunteer translating, helping to translate a web page for one of the NGOs that this outsourcer works with. If so, all I had to do was go to their web site and sign up on their "employment" page, and I would be considered not only for this volunteer translation but for other projects that came up as well. Although it seemed like a legitimate request, written in perfectly respectable Spanish, my first impulse was to ignore it, as I already provide volunteer translations through Translators Without Borders, and this seems like a more appropriate place for NGOs to go for free translations, and I had never had any contact with this agency before.

However, the project looked worthy, so I went to their site and tried to sign up, but as the system would not accept my username and password for some reason, I responded to their email asking for help getting signed into the system. It wasn't until after I sent this email that I went back to the site and followed the link to the web site of the NGO. Again, the web site looked respectable until I started looking at it more closely and saw that the text was laced with links to ads for female viagra squirts!

Now, I'm worried that, by responding to this email, I have somehow opened myself up to a phishing scam or something. Has anyone else received this email, and do you have any recommendations on how to protect myself from phishing?

Yes, Barbara, I received that email too. I looked at the site but decided not to sign up as I already do free translations for Greenpeace occasionally and felt unsure about whether the request was genuine or some kind of scam.
