Inserted footnote appears at and of chapter

In Word 2010 today I tried to insert a footnote, but instead at the bottom of the page it appears at the end of the chapter. What did I do wrong?

Hi Heinrich:

I have Word in Spanish, but please see if this is useful.

In "File" go to the tab "References". Maybe you inserted "endnote" instead of "footnote".

It was an endnote, I clicked on the wrong icon.
