Well, the question states: "Does anyone known of any gaffes made by politicians as a result of poor translation/interpretation or cultural misunderstandings"; and I believe these are the latter.

Je ne me souviens pas des circonstances exactes, mais un politicien québécois avait déclaré au sujet d'un événement regrettable "It's sucks!". Ce qu'un quotidien américain avait repris sous le gros titre "Ça suce!"...
