Proz.com

Tax ID, etc. Nov 9, 2012

Don't worry about the Tax ID field. That is an optional field, and it is mainly for people in the EU, where VAT comes into play in some cases.

If you live in the US, as a freelancer you are responsible for declaring your own income for federal and state tax purposes.
If you work for agencies or end clients, and they pay you more than the predefined threshold (currently $600), they will issue a form 1099-Misc to you, reporting the amount that was paid to you during the year. Th

If you work for agencies or end clients, and they pay you more than the predefined threshold (currently $600), they will issue a form 1099-Misc to you, reporting the amount that was paid to you during the year. They report the same amount to the IRS, so you have to declare it on your tax forms.
They will most likely ask you to fill in and send them a W9 form. You can use your SSN on that, if you don't have a US tax ID. (That's the other reason to ignore that Tax ID field in your ProZ.com profile - you don't want to put your SSN there, ever.)

I suggest you talk to an accountant if you are just starting out, because depending on your individual situation, it may be better for you to incorporate. In some cases it is better to stay as an individual, sole proprietor, but sometimes special arrangements, such as S-corporations, etc. may be better for tax purposes.

I hope this helps
